The Opposition of Mars
Tomorrow night is the opposition of Mars, a celestial event that happens every two or so years when the red planet lines up with the sun and we on planet Earth are sandwiched in between. It is called the opposition of Mars because the Sun and Mars are on opposite sides of the sky ~ handy information if you are looking up to find it.
Mars is found in the constellation Virgo, of which the brightest star is Spica. If this is all completely foreign and yet totally fascinating to you, my tip is to download the Google Sky Map (found in the app store) and point it up at the sky. Pause to allow your astonishment and delight to intermingle and settle. Then move your phone around until you find Mars - aim it for roughly wherever the moon is in the sky.
Next week on April 15 (yes, that is the day of a tres magical full moon and the lunar eclipse) Mars will be the closest to Earth it gets and you will not be able to miss the red planet perched up next to Lady Luna. Mars will outshine stars by a ratio of about ten to one, which in typical martian fashion commands attention as he strides towards us at a rate of about 300km a second.
Don't know about you Bohemians but the movement of the spheres never fails to blow my mind.
What does this mean to us here on Earth? Mars is the masculine planet of action that rules both Aries and Scorpio. Mars can symbolise passion, drive, ambition, competition and war. Fiery, full blooded energy is the red planet's natural state. In ancient times, Mars was said to rule our sexuality and sexual energy and governs weapons, accidents and surgery. Currently Mars is retrograde which in astrology basically means don't start a fight and be wary of your enemies. Disregard any or all of the above at your own peril
How the energy of Mars affects you is peculiar to your chart and where Mars lies within it. Where Mars is placed is the area of our chart that lights up our desires - and these may influence not only our choice of partner but also of career, hobbies & interests. Broadly speaking, the Mars opposition in Virgo and proximity to Earth means our ideas are taking centre stage. Pay attention to what pops into your head. The energy is strong and may keep you awake at night. It may mean you - and particularly the men in your life - are feeling more than a little wired and out of sorts.
Regardless, this is one of those gorgeous occasions in our life where we can stop to consider for just a moment what a small part of a big universe we really are. Take it outside this evening, Bohemians.
