Even if you only studied high school economics, you learned about John Maynard Keynes and his theory of spend and prosper. Economies produce in response to spending which keeps everyone employed and money flowing. This is why our governments are suddenly coming up with billions they haven't had for basic infrastructure, health care or education to stave off recession.
Of course the smart money knows that we are moving from an old bastardry to a new economy. One that comes at less of a cost and with benefits for all. That operates as safety net for the marginalised and ceases to reward only the thoughtless and greedy.
Whenever humanity lurches from one paradigm to another deep in the throes of social change, imagination becomes the most valuable currency. Political upheaval is accompanied by unrest but it also courts explosive creativity and an upsurge in out of the box thinking. How else to build our brave new world darklings?
This means that our creatives - artists and writers, musicians and crafters, poets and visionaries - are the ones we need to be spending our money on. We must support our local Ma and Pa businesses, farmers and growers. Shop locally and holiday regionally and invest wisely in the ones who will dream our sustainable future to life.
This week I have supported Hunter Valley Produce by buying their delicious garlic, Silvi's beautiful poems @thepoetrystore, Lara's incredible myth and ritual @veledavesta and my favourite poison plant herbalist Persephone's Path. I have streamed my favourite music by @eagleandthewolf and @freyajosephinehollick. I am hunting for new tunes and art and magic as well as new ways to raise our artists up.
You can support my work and theirs through Patreon - even a dollar here or there means the (new) world. Please tag anyone and everyone else whose creative work you love - and then consider putting some money where your
is.
